First, a big thank to all at my Saturday morning class in Morley. You guys have been great and I couldn’t have wished for a better group. The fees for this class are now £4.50 per family a week, in advance, or you can take advantage of the new flexible classes option. Buy a block of six classes for £33 and use them at any time over the Spring term.

Also I’m holding two Holiday Classes in Morley on Wednesdays 23rd & 30th December from 10am. All budding mini musicians, old and new, are welcome to come along and each class costs £5 per family.

I’m delighted to announce that TuneTots will be starting classes in Pudsey on Wednesday 6th January 2010 at 1pm, meeting in the Community Cabin of Pudsey Children’s Centre. £2 per family in advance or £3 per family on the day. For more details see here.

As the government launches the National Year of Music, a new report confirms that learning an instrument has many benefits for children

Learning a musical instrument at school improves children’s behaviour, memory and intelligence, a government-commissioned study has found, as ministers launch the first National Year of Music.

Professor Susan Hallam, of the Institute of Education, University of London, analysed scores of researchers’ studies on the benefits of music to children.

Listen to the singing, the laughing, and the shouting; the jumping, stomping, and clapping; the exuberant thumping of drums, the rhythmic rattling of maracas, and the festive jingling of bells. Listen to children making music, and it’s easy to hear they’re having fun.

What’s not so obvious is that while children are singing and clapping, jumping and wiggling, and shaking and tapping on instruments, there’s a whole lot of learning—and growing—going on……
